What equipment does my son need?

You will need to buy football shoes, a pair of white, knee-length game socks, and an athletic supporter. The Broncos will provide your son with a helmet, mouth guard, shoulder pads, practice and game jerseys, girdle and pads and game/practice pants. Soccer shoes are not acceptable as the support is different for the feet/ankles and the cleats are different. If you are looking to either buy or sell a pair of football shoes, information will be posted on the website .

My child wears braces. Does he need a special mouthguard?

It is best to check with your child’s dentist/orthodontist prior to fitting the issued mouthguard. Since these are form-fitting and could impair braces, the orthodontist may recommend a different mouthguard.

Where do the teams practice? Is transportation provided?

Practices are held at the Belgium field. Take Main Street west to KW and turn left (south). The fields are approximately ¼ mile south of Main Street. Transportation to practices and games is the responsibility of the parents. Several families can join together and form a car pool.

Will practice be held rain or shine?

We will practice rain or shine, with the exception of lightning and thunder.  Since our practice facility does not have covered shelter large enough for 100 boys, please come pick up your son if you see or hear the threat of severe weather.  If practice should need to be cancelled due to weather or some other reason, every effort will be made to contact you to notify you.

My son keeps talking about “football time”.  What does that mean?

In order to make the most out of practices, the coaches would like the kids at the practice field and ready to go precisely at 5:00 (4:30 during the school year).  Football time refers to the expectation that the kids will be at the field 15 minutes prior to the start of practice.  So, it is a good idea to have your son at the practice field by 4:45 (4:15).

How will I know when and where to take my son for the scrimmages and games?

Your son’s coach will give them specific information as to the times they would like the kids at the game site depending on their grade level.  As a general rule, you should plan on having your child arrive about 1 hour before their scheduled game.  Directions to regularly scheduled games can be found on the AAYFL website (link).  Directions to scrimmages will be provided by the coaches as the locations change every year.  Often, coaches will meet at a designated spot (either high school parking lot or practice field lot depending on the direction of travel) and you can join the caravan to the games if you are unsure of where you are going.

Which jersey should my son wear for games?

As a general rule, black jerseys are for home games and white jerseys are for away games.  If your child’s coach has different instructions, they will let your son know at practice.

What if my son has a doctor or dentist appointment during practice time or needs to miss a practice?

The coaches understand if a child has to miss practice for a medical reason or appointment.  Please notify your child’s coach prior to the absence if at all possible.

How are player positions selected?

During the first few weeks of practice, the coaches are carefully evaluating the players to determine who would be best suited for offense or defense.  The players are given opportunities to learn and try various positions.  The coaches try very hard to match players to the position that best suits them and meets the needs of the team.  The AAYFL has specific rules about weight limits in regards to which players can carry the ball, so if your child is above a certain weight limit, they will not be a ballcarrier.  This is done for safety purposes.    If you have concerns about the position your child is playing, please talk to their coach.
